How basic is your question? For general info, there is a DNS HowTo, at URl http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html (or on your system; look in /usr/doc). The basics: 1. You probably have the apps you need on your system but not all the data files. 2. You need to run named, probably from a startup script (on Slackware, the needed line is /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2). 3. You need a file that tells named where to get DNS info. The usual one is /etc/named.boot . Slackware normally includes a sample named.boot file. 4. You need the actual DNS diles for the domain you are authoritative for. Entries in named.boot tell named where to find this stuff; I put it in /etc/namedstuff, but practice will vary there. 5. Basically, you need these files (the names are arbitrary, and there are a few competing conventions): root.cache -- this is the list of servers that your host should go to for information about a completely unknwon domain. My Slackware box doesn't include this file, but it's not hard to track down (though the location slips my mind at the moment). named.hosts -- at least one entry per host in your domain, connecting its "canonical" name with its IP address. Also entries for machine aliases, mail relays, etc. named.local -- the localhost loopback entry. named.rev -- entries that allow one to look up IP addresses and get the canonical machine names associated with them. DNS can get more complicated than the above; I've just outlined the setup for a fairly simple domain. A domain should have 2 DNS machines, though one can (ideally will) be off your LAN. Hope this is enough to get you started. Good luck. At 09:03 PM 1/23/99 -0500, John wrote: >Can someone tell me how to set up a DNS server?
