Installing GNOME

I have a clean install of RH 5.2, and I am about to patch it soon
(install the files from the errata). I would like to go the GNOME route,
as full as I can without using GTK 1.1. 

I would like to know how do I begin, where can I find documentations
that covers the process. 

Is the best documentation the GNOME user Guide ?

Is RedHat the best distribution to use as a starting point ?

Is there anything else I should know ?
