This is the third time I am trying to install Linux, I failed in my two prior attempts
to successfully get a working setup. I am currently on strike so I am trying to make
the best use of this time to learn as much Linux as possible. I am willing to find
and read documentation if I can find out where it is. I am extremely frustrated by
the slow pace and inefficiency of my efforts. Things I failed to accomplish yesterday:

1. In running /sbin/sndconfig for my Soundblaster 64 I found no information resource
to select settings which I left at default: IO PORT: 0X220 IRQ: 2 8-BIT DMA:
0 16-BIT DMA: 5
When I got to the part where the system tries to send test audio to the speakers, I
get an error message:
"An error was encountered opening /dev/audio" and I could hear light popping sounds
coming from the speaker. Typing "cat conf.modules" displays:
        alias sound sb
        options -k sb io=0x220 irq=2 dma=0,5

2. In Xfree, the screen picture is too wide, too short, too off center, some
hourglass. There seems to be menu selections to adjust the screen image but they
don't seem to work.

3. I haven't found straightforward documentation on how to set up my US Robotics
56Kmodem or my dialup Internet service. I haven't gotten as far as trying to run any
program under Xfree.

4. I have text files on floppy from another Unix korn shell environment that are
screen captures via Windoz Procomm by typing "cat <filename>". There is no access to
a floppy drive in this environment I would like to input these files into the shell
from the floppy drive /dev/fd0 where I can work on them with the vi editor.

5. When sending a test file to my Panasonic laser printer KX-P6500 under Emulation
HP Laser IIP:
        man ?|lpr
the file prints, then the printer sits blinking. Hitting reset prints out another
portion of the last page.

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated, either via newsgroup or directly if you
feel the subject matter is not worth posting for everyone.
