AFAIK these devices will stop working when they get to a transformer, It is
unlikely that houses that far away would be on the same transformer.

Not to question you, but are you sure about being "anywhere on
the power grid"? I know you can have a network (LOW bandwidth)
through your house through the powerlines, but AFAIK, they are
unable to get the signal through transformers and such.
