Oh, that's different. As I read your first message, I thought you knew about
pppd and were having trouble making it work. Okay, here goes ....
You need to run "pppd" and its associated dialer "chat". You can do that
from the command line in a couple of different ways -- not knowing the
details of your setup, I can't suggest which is best for you. Basically, you
can create a shell script to start pppd, including there all the information
it needs as command-line switches (there's a nice example of this somewhere,
I think in the PPP HowTo) or you can run it directly and put the needed info
in /etc/ppp/options. For the details, try reading the PPP HowTo, probably on
your system (somewhere in /usr/doc; exact location varies by distribution
and version) or at URL http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO.html .
It's a bit dated but still very helpful on the details.
With the pppd/chat approach, you need to start and stop ppp connections by
hand (from the command line in an xterm window). There is a program called
"diald" that will put connections up and down in the background, but I don't
use it so can't advice you on the details (beyond noting that there is a
fairly old Diald mini-HowTo, at URL
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Diald.html). Once you get things
working by hand, you might want to see if this will suit your needs.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
