1) Search for occurences of "virtual" in xf86config. Comment them out.

2) In the section listing your screen resolutions, list the one you use
most often first. (assuming that your most used resolution is the
largest). X will make the virtual display equal to the largest listed
resolution, so eliminate larger resolutions.

3) If you occasionally use more than one resolution, and still don't
want virtual displays, have more than one version of xf86config, and
copy them to the main xf86config when you want to switch. This is best
done as root and with a script.
