Did someone already answer this? If so, sorry for repeating.

This is a security feature of Linux. You should be able to work around it by
logging in as an ordinary user, then using "su" to switch to root. You could
change the settings in securettys, but you'd do better to get used to this
limitation -- it isn't important in your specific setup (I think), but it
would be an important bit of added safety for Linux hosts that are
accessable via the Internet.
