SO...

having got Intel Redhat to work so well I was given an Alpha box to use
and purchased RedHat Alpha Linux

Details:

AlphaStaion 533 with AlphaBIOS 5.62-1
System Alpha PC164SX
21164PC 533MHz, 128MB RAM, Adaptec 2940 U/W SCSI CTRL
Quantum 4GB SCSI disk, Toshiba SCSI CDROM

I copied "linload" and \MILO\sx164 to a DOS floppy and renamed sx164 to
"milo"

I used rarwite to copy \images\sx164.img to a floppy disk

I used rawrite to copy \images\ramdisk.img to a floppy disk

I setup the Alpha BIOS to boot MILO off floppy, it then loads and does a
sort of reboot. At the milo prompt I enter...

Milo> Boot floppy

I then swap the floppy disk for the one containing the sx164 image.

Milo looks a the floppy and finds a linux conf and prompts...

Available configuration: linux
Boot:

So I enter "Linux"

#UNZIP This is a zipped file.
############# etc
Lots of text scrolls by...

VFS: Insert root floppy disk to be loaded into RAM disk and press Enter

I swap in the \images\ramdisk.img disk and press Return. The floppy disk
lights up and nothing happens.

If I take the disk out I get the message...

floppy 0 removed during I/O
end_request: I/O error, dev 02:00, sector 0
RAMDISK: Couldn't find a valid ramdisk image starting at 0

Any help would be welcome

Regards
