How long did you leave it before you took the floppy out?  Copying the
ramdisk image will take a while, and I don't know if there's any sort of
progress indicator or not.  The fact that it spewed errors when you took
the floppy out suggests that iw was in fact reading it.
The only other possibility I can think of is if the ram disk image is
corrupt - try another floppy and see if this makes any difference.
