The main advantages of glibc-2 are that it is thread-safe, that it
reduces the dependency of applications upon kernel data types, and has
a few new features (e.g. NSS).

You should probably just upgrade to a glibc-2 based distribution.
There are several issues which can cause problems with trying to run a
mixed libc-5/glibc-2 system.
