hey,
It would help if you knew the chipset for sure, but there is a SVGA server
that was written for voodoo cards, specifically the banshee chipset, but
it might be worth a try.  Download and installation instructions are
availible at the following website:
http://glide.xxedgexx.com/status.html
this is the status page, but you will see a link to where you can download
and stuff.
Also, when you configure the xwindows it would be better instead of
running xconfigurator for you to try running xf86config.  This will let
you input the memory that your video card supports because of the new
nature of the cards linux does not offer 16mg as an option.
