32bpp vs 24bpp

Ok, I realize that the difference between 24bpp and 32bpp is
the addition of the "alpha-channel", but could someone explain what
the alpha-channel is used for?

I am trying to decide between 1280x1024x32bpp or 1600x1200x24bpp.
