Modem's and serial ports

I have a usr 56k that 95 thinks is PnP, but I have jumpered to com2 irq3
(win95 also uses these).  I have tried to configure minicom to use it by
specifying ttyS1 but it wont let me give it any commands.  What do i have to
do to get the modem to respond?
