Okay. Two things to check. I've marked the relevant parts of the printcap
entry below. My guess is that the first is okay but the second is not.

This is the spooler directory for the printer. Make sure it is actually
present in /var/spool/lpd .

This is the filter program that lpd will call to process the output. Make
sure it is there. (I'm guessing it is missing -- explains both the second
error message and the format problem). What you need here is printer
specific and I don't recall what printer you are using.
