I really don't know.  HP doesn't send documentation with these Deskjets 
any more.  (I knew the one I bought would work because I borrowed one and
tried it.) I once had an old HP500 that had (I think) a dip-switch setting
for serial line operation.  As far as B&W operation goes my 693C is the
same as the old 500.
