Hello,
Please excuse the length of this e-mail, but here goes;
After using RedHat 5.0 for a bit, I decided to get Xwindows up and
runing, which I managed, it used RedHat's default window
manager, (fvwm I think), but not being satisfied with that, I
downloaded X 3.3.1 and installed that with the new SVGA server.
This seems to work nicely, except I have lost all window managers.
So I found KDE on a cd and tried to install it. It claimed failed
dependancies, so I found the required packages and installed them
too. Now I have Klibs-1.0-2 installed, and kdesdk0beta3-9, but
when I try to install (rpm -i K<blah>.rpm) kbase, it gives me the
error;
Error fillup not found. This should not happen. Compare
/etc/rc.config and /var/adm/fillup-templates/rc.config.kdm and
update manually.
I compared them and they are identical. (What's a fillup?)
But rpm -qa claims the package is installed. When trying to start
KDE (typing "KDE") however I get pages of error, all along the lines
of;
starting kcontrol -init: can't resolve symbol _vt.<number>Q<text>
culminating in a segmentation fault, core dumped.
Appropriate packages installed are;
XFree86 3.3.1
X_SVGA 3.3.1
Klibs-1.0-2
Kdesdk-beta3-9
kbase-1.0-3 (? not inst properly)
Qt-1.42-1rh51
(Qtlib for redhat 5.1? is this the problem)
Please can anyone give me some suggestions on what to do to get
this working, what is the fillup not found error, where can I get qtlib
for rh5.0, if this is the problem, what's the correct way to start kde,
why can't it resolve any symbols? etc.
Thanks very much in advance,
Simon.
