Just my preferences, anyway, but I'd update the kernel to 2.0.36, or, if
you're feeling like downloading a TON of stuff to update your entire
system with, download 2.2.1.

You probably should get the RH 5.2 CD and do an upgrade of the packages on
your system, then get 2.2.1, which works really good and it compiles in
about an hour to an hour and a half, I think it was, on that type of
system (I'm running a 486DX4/100, too =).

If you want to keep 2.0.34, well... fine =)  It *looks* as if there's
something missing in the way of a library or something may be
misconfigured... but I may be wrong.
