problems compiling kernel

the problem:  after running makeconfig, I type make dep ; make clean ;
make zlilo.  the first two commands appear to process correctly,
however, when make zlilo tries to start the makeconfig again.  I'm using
redhat 5.1 which I have newly installed, I have previously compiled
kernels using slackware and never had a problem.
