Ok. Just Linux-side tests, as you requested.
1. You don't mention setting up network routes. Did you? (A line something
like "route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0" -- check "man
route" for exact syntax.) What is the output of "route -n"? Does it show
eth0 as a route to network 192.168.1.0?
2. You don't say, but I'm assuming that you have the machines connected
through a hub. When you try to ping the WinXX host from the Linux host, do
you see:
a. activity lights flashing on the Linux host's NIC?
b. activity lights flashing on the hub port that the Linux host is
attached to?
3. On the Linux host, what DOES happen when you try to ping the Win95 host?
(And BTW, you are pinging by actual IP address, aren't you? If you're using
a hostname, the problem could be with name-to-address conversion.) Try
taking OUT the gateway command and see if this changes the response.
