KDE is older (started first) and is further along than GNOME which has
yet to reach version 1 (0.99.8). GNOME was created because KDE is based
on the Qt library which is non-free, thus GNOME is a free (from ground
up) replacement of KDE.
I have never used either still dloading GNOME.
Currently KDE is easier to install than GNOME <less small pieces>,
KDE also probably has more applications than GNOME
and while I won't use it I have heard good things about it, from a
Widows user.
Generally it is advisable not to ask questions like this because they
tend to lead to flame wars, go figure.
