My guess for this second question is that root and user are using
different chat script files. Root's is ok, but user has some extra
control character(s) in the send string that don't print in the log but
confuse the modem. At least that is the only way I could get my modem
to answer what appears to be a valid command with "ERROR".
If they are using the same script file, then I am utterly bewildered.
I find bpe is handy to see what is _really_ in a file.
