Howdy,

sorry for the length of this message, but I am not sure what may be
relavent so I am includeing alot of info, hopefully some one can point
me in the right direction.
I have been running linux for several months now (Red Hat 5.1) and have
upgraded my kernal to 2.2. I use KDE as my desktop environment and
always run as root (i know, i know)

A few days ago, I got a bizzar error message while running netscape that
it couldnt find a file and that my bookmarks might not be available
(there was more, but unfortunatly I didnt write it down). As my netscape
started locking up on me, I shut it down and decided to reboot my
machine. After doing so I logged back in ok and when I started up my
xserver I recieved a message that KDE could find a directory (or 2)
under /root and that it was recreating them. Everything seemed ok, but I
noticed when I got into KDE that all of my desktop
icons/backgrounds/desktop configuration was gone, and things were set
back to the default configuration. I opened up a terminal window and
noticed that my shell prompt was different (it said just "#bash" rather
than "user@box dir") I launched netscape, and found although I still had
all my bookmarks and email messages, I had lost my address book. Also
now when ever I browse the web, I get a message that my book marks have
been changed and are being reloaded every 3 or 4 pages. Also I have
noticed that commands are acting different at the terminal level. It
used to be a default that rm would prompt with an are you sure? message,
and I would have to use -f to override, now it just removes the file.
Another odd thing is that if I do a source /etc/profile, my prompt
returns to the old style (though the rm isnt fixed).

I am wondering if anyone has run into a problem like this before and can
point me in the right direction for setting thinsgs back up correctly.
At the time I was not changeing anything in the system and my system
seems set up ok (as far as etc/profile and root directories), but maybe
there are other things I need to check?

Thanks in advance,

Robert Treat
