Real Basic Info

Hello,

I am trying to find generic information as to how to install
packages on my LINUX laptop.  Where on the net could I find
this type of basic information?

There are lots of links regarding the installation of LINUX
out there, but I having trouble finding the next step,
installing useful applications.

Any pointers will be appreciated.
