hey guys, good day.

I'm new to linux and still kinda struggling on figure out how to
properly configure my linux box to get it running nice and smoothly, the
ultimate goal is: to work under a MS free environment.. :-/
Anyway, thanks for your helping hand all this while, i'll try my best :)

i'm using rhl5.0, and navigator as my browser, recently i try to switch
my internet work place to linux, so i was like seeking for the right
mail client etc to make it up and running(pop3 & smtp direct to ISP),
therefore i downloaded the below file from linux:

fetchmail-4.7.7.tar.gz
fetchmail-4.7.7-1.i386.rpm

the reason I downloaded both the rpm and the tar.gz is, i've been try on
the .rpm many times, it doesn't work, could it be something that i've
done wrong?

usually i got to those linux software download site either http or ftp,
when i click on the .rpm file link, it won download, it'll display the
"content" of the file, so what i did was, i right click and "Copy link
as...",
and no, i didnt rename it. but the .rpm didnt seems work. when i try
using the RPM under X, it cant see the package even with the right path,
and when i try rpm -i filename.rpm, most of the time it gave me error
reading file or some kind...what could be wrong?

and this is what rpm gave me this time.....what should i do?

[root@cold tmp]# rpm -i fetchmail-4.7.7-1.i386.rpm
error -2 reading header: Success

and then upon the failed of fetchmail-4.7.7-1.i386.rpm i try the
fetchmail-4.7.7.tar.gz
with tar xvfz fetchmail-4.7.7.tar.gz, going well, and follow the
installation instruction, done and when i try to run, it said....

[root@cold tmp]# fetchmail
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

so what the hell does that means? what do i do?

and last question, should i bother 'bout the log files in /var/log at
this moment? I mean sould i do some cleaning ? how? delete it or?

sorry for flooding this list with silly question, i appreciated yo help!
thanks.
