Have you tried disabling the motherboard's cache? I've had "bad" cache on a
couple of systems; most recently, I got numerous read errors from the CD
while installing RH 5.2. I turned off the cache and the errors went away
(though the system dragged a little bit). After installation, I was able to
turn the cache back on.
