One of the easiest ways of dealing with gzip files is to use a
program called Midnight Commander (mc is the command). You've probably
already got it but in case you don't you can get it from
ftp://ftp.sunsite.unc.edu in the directory /pub/Linux/utils/file.
Midnight Commander is a file management program (Norton Commander
clone). To uncompress a gzip file just hi-light it, press enter and it
will open a virtual directory. From then it's just a matter of copying
the contents (F5) to where you want it. I find it great if you just want
to look at the readme you don't have to uncompress the gzip file, just tap
enter on the file then F3 on the readme.
Hope this is useful
