Check out www.tummy.com
They have support for at least HP and Microtek scanners, that was one 
year ago. Perhaps should I mention that: their products are commercial,
but they work fine.

Or you can try sane. As long as I know, this is a free scanning program.
You can find the program on your Linux CDs, and the HOWTO is in
/usr/doc/sane-<X>, where <X> of course means the version.
