Thanx Neil, that worked. But i fail to understand, why it did not work with
.Xmodmap file. My .xinitrc file has entry like this
"usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap"
Any clue?

Try putting this line into your ~/.xinitrc file.
xmodmap -e "keycode 22 = BackSpace"
