I just tried it.  Did not work, the mouse did not even mouse... in fact, it
was not worse, but not better either,  Thanks for the tip anyway.

Try this:

        # killall gpm
        # gpm -R -t mman

In X, set your mouse up as a Mouse Systems mouse, on /dev/gpmdata.
