What you'll do, is (as root):

        # cd /etc/X11

then, you'll start your favorite editor and edit the file XF86Config.  In
the file, you'll see a section like this (I assume you're using the SVGA
server in this example):

Section "Screen"
    Driver      "svga"
    Device      "Generic VGA"
    #Device      "My Video Card"
    Monitor     "Acer Acerview 34T/34TL"
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       8
        Modes       "800x600"
        ViewPort    0 0
        Virtual     1024 768
    EndSubsection
EndSection

OK... the line that reads "Modes" is the line that says what the actual
resolution is, and the "Virtual" line is the size of the "virtual
desktop."  Make this number equivilent to the Modes number (the number
that is actually used if you have more than one)... and the virtual
desktop will go away.
