Try posting:

        1. The ifconfig line you enter.

        2. The *actual* error you get (not "something along those lines").

        3. ifconfig run in probe mode (that is, without any arguments, so it
reports the state of all interfaces).

Otherwise, we can only offer wild guesses. One is to wonder if the kernel
has recognized your card and assigned it to eth0.

Oh, the output of "more /proc/interrupts" and "more /proc/ioports" might
also be helpful.
