make is distributed as the gmake package in Slackware "Disk set" D (I use
the quotes because the files don't fit on floppies any more). I'm not myself
sure what "install" is in this context.

make generally needs the standard compiler package that also comes as part
of set D.

How you install a package depends on the package. The Slackware .tgz
packages generally are binaries, not source, so you don't need to compile
them, just install them (pkgtool will do this, starting from the .tgz file).
You do need to compile some packages that come from third parties, and maybe
some from the contrib directory (not sure about this).
