Emacs! Pick your flavor, the one true free GNU-Emacs, or the equally free and
vastly powerful XEmacs. Editing, compiling, and Zippy all in one place. Plus,
you can use it from the command line or from within X. Even better, I
understand that there'll be an emacs kernel next year so you won't need
anything else ever ;-)
Seriously though, there are a ton of editors that will do this, though emacs
was the first to come to mind. Personally, I prefer a separate xterm open along
side a normal editor. This is much easier than in windows because an
xterm is "real", unlike those silly dos windows they give you in M$ systems.
