I just finished installing Gnome, which was pretty tough but I think
worth it. Around the same time I ran sndconfig and got my soundcard
recognized. Now, the problem is, when I run gnome and use the gnome PPP
tool to connect to an ISP I get an error saying my modem is not
responding. I am wondering if this is a conflict with some
initializations going on in gnome or is it an issue with a hardware
conflict in the soundcard?

Here are the steps:
I boot the computer (HP Omnibook) and log on as root.
If I run minicom then, the modem initializes and I can type ATZ ->OK
ATDT###### and they work fine.
Now I run startx, gnome and enlightenment runs and I try to connect
using gnomePPP and get (I'm not sure exactly) "a modem is not
responding" or "Initialization Prolem" error and some locking of the PPP
app.
Now I leave X and run minicom again and this time the modem init string
is really slow and ATZ takes a long time to get an OK
All the while any of the system sounds (.wav) files do not work in
gnome.

Thanks for any thoughts,
Michael Stearne
