I've been asking this question elsewhere, but so far no answer, although
I see that I'm not the only one with this problem (so far, seen no useful
answers).
I've moved some Type1 font files into a directory I made under .../fonts/
and then ran the following on that directory as root:
mkfontdir <path to the directory>
However, I'm just kicked immediately back to the prompt and no font.dir
file is created.
I've tried running the command from within the directory. I've checked
permissions on the directory and the command. I've run the command from
its source etc., but without luck.'
