If you read man mkfontdir carefully, you will see that all it offers to
do for scaled fonts is to copy fonts.scale to fonts.dir. If your fonts
didn't include a fonts.scale or fonts.dir, you are SOL as far as
mkfontdir is concerned. However, there is a little package I found in
the LSM called type1inst - hang on, I'll see if I can find it..
metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/X11/xutils/type1inst-0.9.tar.gz is where I
got it, about a year ago. The version might have changed. The README
says there is also an i386.rpm. but doesn't say where. If that
interests you, check contrib as well as RPMS. The tar.gz should work
fine on a RH system, too, the rpm is just a convenience.
In most cases, it is more blessed to be lucky than good. Having the
right tool for the job at hand helps too.
