Hi,

I interested in dumping MS OSes out of my life -- not because they make
billions, but because, while they make some good apps, their OSes -- NT
and especially 9X -- are not stable, and mainly because I hate their
covert proprietary ploys such as altering java and all their attempts to
own what would otherwise be open standards. One would think they'd
learned the lessons of Radio Shack, IBM and Apple from days gone by. But
arrogance and greed seem to rule here.

Anyway, I picked up a copy of RH 5.2 and am impressed. But I have much
to learn. And I see that there's quite a learning curve -- which on
current estimates would be worthwhile.

I don't see any problem in migrating over a period of time except in one
crucial area. And I would greatly appreciate some perspective in general
and in specific from anyone familiar with both linux/unix in particular
and the database world in general:

My basic problem is that I'm an xbase programmer am quite entrenched in
the use of foxpro for DOS 2.6. I also have visual fox 5 but haven't even
installed it (was cheaper to purchase this and downgrade to 2.6 than to
upgrade from 2.5 to 2.6). I gather that I MIGHT be able to run fox for
dos with dosemu. But of course a native environment is always better.
So I quoted the message below from someone replying to a similar query.
But I haven't been able to find the reply containing the promised links.
Were they ever posted?

I'm interested to know about the suitability of unix/linux for database
work, as well as any xbase compatible environments that would run in
linux.

I also need to be able to do html forms -- with all the bells & whistles
such as submit buttons, radio buttons, list boxes, etc. and so far I'm
having trouble getting the data back in a usable form -- even in NT with
netscape 4.51. The data's coming back with one record per line instead
of one field per line. I need this facility because I want to have web
forms posted to a plain-text e-mail, AND be able to import and convert
the data in to dbf files. (csv or any standard format would be okay
because I can deal with that IF there are dbf facilities) I would
appreciate any help on know if any or all of this type of work would be
suited to a linux environment.

So far I've found one java app that's great for viewing, editing and
converting to and from xbase database files, but I need much more than
this. This is the key point on my being able to fully migrate.

Any general or specific viewpoints on database suitabilty of linux,
foxpro/xbase or other database facilities in linux, web-form posting and
importing would be greatly appreciatated.

thanks much,
Jamie Faunt
