Richard answered most of your questions. As to the one he skipped ... 2.0.36
is the last of the 2.0.x kernels shipped openly (some Linux hardware vendors
may have kernel modifications that didn't make it into the general
distribution, even though they are GPL'd). Anyone waiting for the 2.2.x
kernel to settle down, or to ship as the default on distribution CDS, before
moving to it will be using this or something older (I have 2.0.30 here, for
example, and a lot of people seem still to use it).
