Looks like it means just what it says - it wants the file writable only
by the owner of the file. If that is the case, do:
chmod 700 .exrc
and all should be well. Not sure about that first digit - 600 may work
just as well. I'm not too terribly familiar with vi (I'm one of those
emacs types) but judging from that error message I'd say it's a
permission problem. Chances are the reason you weren't getting that
problem with OpenLinux is different distros set up default permissions
differently. Your default permissions are settable - if you use the
bash shell you can set your default permission to be used when you
create a file by putting the line:
umask xxx
in your .bashrc where xxx is replaced by the *opposite* of what you want
for the default permission. For example - mine is set to umask 077
This gives any file I create the permission of 700 The umask tells
which permission bits to turn *off*, not on. It's a little
counter-intuitive, but once it's set there's probably no reason to ever
change it again.
