not sourced?

I put an .exrc file in my home directory and even though it is empty, I get
the following error if I try using vi after creating that file:

.exrc: not sourced: writeable by a user other than the owner.


What does this mean?  I am using Debian and never saw that error when I used
OpenLinux and created .exrc
