once you'd compiled the kernel, did you do a make modules, and a
make modules_install ?
The preferred link was something introduced in RH 5.2... I ended up
removing it anyway, and didn't have any problems... Try doing a
'depmod' -a as root and then manually '/sbin/modprobe moduletotry'
and see if that works...
