You will need X if you like very much to use a graphical platform.
Or if you'll want to run graphic intesive software - multimedia and office
apps. But this isn't a must. There is svgalib, which lets you run image
viewers, games and other apps that want to use graphics from the prompt.

A good startiong point is to check the applications already
installed by your distribution. So you'll find all man pages under
/usr/man. The commands are under /usr/man/man1 and /usr/man/man8. And
more info about rcfiles you'll find in /usr/man/man5.
