I dont think Redhat supply any ax25 related modules as part of there
distribution or at least they did not in earlier versions, look into
/lib/modules/2.0.36-07 or it might even be called "perferred", if you see

ax25.o
netrom.o
mkiss.o
bpqether.o
baycom.o
scc.o

Then you already have ax25 support in modules form.
Then there is not realy any need to recopile.
I say this because "slakware-3.6" has ax25 support as modules.

You will need to get ax25-utils-2.1.42a for glibc, i belive its available
at; ftp.pspt.fi/pub/ham/linux/ax25
Do not try ax25-utils-2.1.42a.tar.gz those are for libc5 and will not
compile under Redhat 5.0 and above.

There is also the AX25-HOWTO which you will find in your /usr/doc/* dir's.
Its a little out of date but it will give you examples of howto setup your
system to use ax25.
