For the same reason Windows and Macintosh mount and
umount floppies. Macs you drag the floppy into the
trash to umount it. Windows is a little less
obvious, but what they do is always keep the drive
synced then umount the disk when the write is done.
This way the light is on the entire time the disk
is being mounted (used) giving the user the warm
fuzzies.

There is a program which makes Linux operate the
same as Windows. Not sure of the URL or name, but
a search on http://freshmeat.net for floppy may
turn it up. Also try mount or automount.

However, with the exception of when trying to
quickly copy a single file to a disk, the mount/
umount sequence is really nice because it queues
all writes to the floppy and does the actual write
when it gets around to it or the disk is umounted,
whichever comes first, which makes your system
operate smoothly and without interruption. It
also means you can (seemingly) write multiple files
to the floppy at the same time, unlike Windows.
With the Linux/Unix way of doing things you can
continue on your merry file managing ways instead
of waiting while a stupid graphic of flying pieces
of paper go from one folder to another. With Windows
you can't even do hard drive access while a floppy
access is in progress. Hm. Well, that's my
dose of Windows bitterness for the day. ;-)
