I just run xfstt all the time.  That way it is there whenever X wants a
font from it.  In /etc/rc.d/rc.local I have

/usr/X11R6/bin/xfstt &

Also, you must tell X where to find the fonts.  In Section "Files", with
your other font paths, you want:

    FontPath    "unix/:7100"

This could stop X from starting if xfstt is not running.  I haven't
found that to be a problem.

Now X should have the TTF's available to it.  You could use xfontsel or
xlsfonts to check.  Then you have only to convince your apps to use
them.
