You can use a null-modem cable to set up a PPP connection between the two
machines. I've done it, but only as an exercise, never for real use, so I
don't know how well it performs under significant load. I think the PPP
HowTo has some info on how to do this ... but really it's no different from
setting up a ppp between a pair of hosts connected by modems.
