Do you know that the keyboard is working? I had a problem with Slack 3.5 on
a Dell that used a PS/2 connection -- there were 2 PS/2 jacks on the
machine. One worked with the keyboard, but the other didn't. 

A long shot, perhaps, but it's all that comes to mind from your description.
