Oops!  rpm -ivh no.such.file-0.0.0.rpm also gives the same error
message, so probably I was wrong to suspect permission problems.  I hope
I haven't confused the issue too badly.  A vfat floppy with long
filenames shows strange-looking 8.3 names if mounted as -t msdos,
typically XFree8~1.rpm or so.  You can get the long names by umounting
it and mounting it -t vfat, or just use the 8.3 names as you find them.

I would not like to try to do much of anything on a *nix system without
ls -l.  :-)
