Perhaps you know already, but in case you don't...if the X server shuts
down spontaneously, either you didn't define any modes (this is
unlikely), or it has discarded all of them for reasons that make sense
to it.  For each one it discards, it writes a line on stderr, which you
can capture with

startx &>oops

and quite possibly, you can correct what has caused it to discard them,
and get the thing to work.
