why do you think redhat is not a serious way ?
i think all distributions are equal since linux + all the gnu stuff
shipped whith it are the same.
you think linuxconf hide too much to learn ? then don't use it !!

all the info you need is in /usr/doc anyway, take vi or emacs and go edit
the files.

feel free to upgrade anything without using rpm, compile all the binaries
you want ...
linux will ever be linux, shipped by redhat, mandrake, slackware or
others, it really does not matter.

i know redhat use special rc script tuned by them, but debuging them is a
way to learn also ;)

Subject: Starting Point

I realise that this will probably start world war 3, but here goes
 anyway

Which version of Linux for x86 is best to start on? I have used Redhat 5
(very) briefly but I want to start getting into Linux in a serious way.

Also, does anyone know of a good book for learning Linux, but also takes
you
pretty deep into the system, so by the time you've finished your more
intermediate than beginner. Please include ISBN No if it's a non-UK book
otherwise it'll be murder to get hold of it.

Cheers

Ailwyn
